Monday Blues

Chelsea won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And it was a fantastic win to boot!
8 goals to cap off their final match.

Not that I'm an ardent Chelsea fan...
To add insult to Manchester United fans' injury, I'd rather Chelsea win than the Reds :/

Arsenal did well too!
Finished 3rd in the league and van Persie (swoons) scored the second goal!

PS @ Palais yet again

Went for dinner at PS cafe some time back in Jan.
Have been neglecting my fav restaurant quite a bit this year...

Got to revisit it more often in order to conquer the neverending PS Cafe dessert list.

Their flowers at the dinner table never fail to impress me.
Wonder how much they spend on flowers every month.... they have it everywhere, in the washroom, at the entrance, at the dining table, at the cake/dessert counter. It's fresh flowers mind you!

Settled for the airconditioned indoor area as the heat & humidity outside was unbearable.
Palais indoors was nice as well but give me Harding's indoors anytime!

This time i tried the Chocolate Crunch Doorstop Cake. What a mouthful for a name.
This cake was indeed very crunchy as i ploughed through layers of nuts, biscotti (i think) and maltesers.

After several mouthfuls, i was done.. the cake was too rich for me. bleah...

I saw this Granny Smith Apple Toffee Pudding from PS website and it was love at first sight!

So naturally, I came, I had to order and I ate it.
The real thing looks different (if not better) from the photo in their website.

Gastronomic Wishlist

In a bid to try out and strike off as many culinary escapades from my gastronomic wishlist, here are a few nice ones that I've been to lately.

House @ Dempsey

Had been dying to eat their american sliders (mini burgers) and sweet potato fries!!!

On the way down to the old barracks...

Lamb shank.... so-so i guess

Grilled corn cob was excellent!

Now for the main star................ My american sliders!
I chose mushroom and blue cheese.
Check out the huge pile of fries. Its truffled flavored fries btw.

And the thicker and darker colored fries are the sweet potato fries (or nibblets as they call it).
The sweet potato nibblets are damn good!!!!!
Although i'm a huge fan of anything that is truffle-flavored, the sweet potato nibblets totally outperformed the truffled fries.

Marina Day

Gen's last day in SG before heading back to down under...
We wasted no time and started our day bright and early (just for you!) with brunch at our long awaited rider's cafe!

Anyway, on a side note, i think the singapore flyer which used to be the most prominent icon of the singapore skyline has been overshadowed by the towering marina sands!

Went for a short educational tour of the barrage which was interactive and truly enjoyable.
The company matters too, of course!

From our educational tour, we learnt that there are a series of nine crest gates at this dam at the mouth of the Marina Basin.
The crest gates at the dam would be activated to release storm water into the sea to prevent flooding.

Top 5 Fashion Faux Pas

I know ironclad rules for fashion are silly and pointless as people want to stand out and differentiate themselves with their own unique style. But some things just work or it doesn't. So here are 5 things that ABSOLUTELY do not work at ALL!

1) The Capri Pants
This is a piece of clothing I would love to hate!
So unless you have Victoria Beckham's dropdead gorgeous figure and legs, please do not wear this unfashionable item as it is off-putting and it only serves to accentuate the cankle (calf and ankle).

2) The Culottes
These piece of clothing is "lottes" uncool!
Some time ago, the culottes were big. It still is now as I am still seeing it around.
Frankly, they just confuse the pants off me.

3) Mismatching Suit
Is there even such a thing? It sounds like an oxymoron!
But yes, there is! And I've seen women wearing it here!
It is after all called a "suit", meaning it comes in a matching suit, aka matching blazer and bottom you dud!

4) Unmanly Man!
I find it utterly unacceptable when a guy carries his wife/gf's handbag.
Hello! It is called a ladies handbag for a reason.
And a guy carrying a handbag, albeit with good intentions, comes off as being downright wussy and henpecked!
Guys, please please PLEASE be a man and STOP carrying your wife/gf's handbag!!!
Channel your thoughtfulness in other ways like holding the door for your woman instead.
If a guy offers to carry mine, I'll write him off immediately, as fast as you can say "handbag"!

5) The Mismatching Belt/Shoes Combi
Nuff' said. Just make sure that the color of your belt matches the color of your shoes.

Also, the finish of your belt and shoes need to match. In other words, if your shoes are shiny, your belt should be shiny as well.

This is something I read from the sartorialist that is so very true...

The "manner" of a person. "Manner" is not something you can learn from a book. Unfortunately, it is something you just have to be or develop.

A great scene of modern manner on '30 Rock' the other day:

"Liz and Jack went out to dinner at a very chic restaurant. As they sat down at the table, Jack immediately moved the candle from the center of the table to the side of the table. Liz looked at him kinda funny, not understanding why he did that, but not really caring either. Later, however, when Liz reached across the table to steal some of Jack's food (as she always does), she realised he moved the candle so her sleeve wouldn't catch fire when she reached across the table. Jack's manners and graces were so attuned to her as a friend, that he knew her moves before she did. Ahhhhhhh.... guys, women notice the small stuff.

KL Trip

This is going to be one very long post......
My routine for the last 2 months was leave SG on Monday and stay in KL for 5 days and then leave KL on Friday.
I'm not complaining as i get to leave SG (finally!) and just go somewhere, anywhere!

This is the lovely view from my journey to work every Monday morning.....

Don't ask me where the aerial view of this is.. i have no idea.
It's definitely not Singapore, this I'm very sure!

One of the nights, i was so enthralled by this stairway to culinary heaven!...

Decided to try this one out.... and it leads to................

A contemporary thai restuarant - Tamarind Hill

Another restuarant called T.G.I. Fridays.. kinda like Breeks/Swensons/Tony Roma's
Heard they are opening an outlet here in SG.. or have they already opened? whatever...

And for dinner, within walking distance from the Shang, we discovered a brussels restaurant...
just for my boss cos he's a kuai lo from Brussels :)

it is housed in Menara Hap Seng (JFYI if you ever happen to go to KL)

Had to have Hoegaarden of course since i am at a beer cafe and Hoegaarden is from Brussels.
Damn, i always thought Hoegaarden was a German beer

Had a pot Moules vin Blanc (Mussels in white wine in English) accompanied with frites.
I always have to have this whenever i dine at Brussel Sprouts or Oosters in SG.

One of the nights, decided to venture somewhere further and headed to a highly accoladed French restaurant called Cafe Cafe.
During the first few weeks in the city, read alot about Cafe Cafe as it was featured in many many many magazines so die die must try!

The entire restaurant was very pretty but was far too dark for my poor Motorola phone to capture anything decent

My first time dining at any hardrock cafe at all... i did not even dined at the one in singapore, how ironic

For this whole work trip, I really got to try things that i have been putting off while living my life

a gigan-mungous plate of nachos with the whole works... jalepenoes, tomatoes, cheese, chiili, cilantro

My mac & cheese... real soul-ful and comfort food

a cute little girl pranced up to my table to show me her Hard Rock Cafe badges that she pinned on her t-shirt

and.... she even asked for 2 more badges from the waitress to give to my boss and i. what a sweetie!

Another night, we walked down Jalan P. Ramlee, the street perpendicular to the Shang and headed to.....

KL TOWER!!! or Menara KL in Bahasa

although we heard from our colleagues that the restaurant up there isn't really that good, being tourists, we ABSOLUTELY have just got to try it regardless!
Menara KL is the 2nd tallest building after the Twin Towers.
It is built on top of a hill and from the top of KL Tower, you actually feel as high up as the Twin Towers

It's a revolving restaurant at the top of the KL Tower.
Dinner is RM180 per person

and we can see the Twin Towers.... It looks like the KL Tower is taller right? It's just an optical illusion.

There's something quaint or weird about Bahasa I must say.... the structure of the language is opposite from English.

For example, Tower in Bahasa is Menara and KL Tower is not KL Menara but Menara KL. You must structure it front-to-back.
Also in the case of Fried Rice = Nasi(rice) Goreng(fried)
No wonder the people of the race can either be the master of the English language or Bahasa Melayu but seldom both.

Subsequent weeks, i put up at the Traders.
Which was much better cos it's nearer to my office and best of all, I get to stay at the Club room meaning i can use the Club Lounge for brekkie, high tea and evening cocktails! Super!

I am immmersed in this breathtaking view every morning while having breakfast...

And.................................... I can even see Genting Highlands(circled below)!!!
Genting is only 30 minutes away.

The perks of the lounge was...

1) unlimited booze

2) the amazing spread of food

3) an all rounded breakfast..... on different days of course!

4) and the fantastic cityview be it day or night

the place is damn chi chi one.. not as cosy as my other dining escapades

they specialise in the finest cuts of steak...

lobster bisque was divine! and dinner was the usual steak, steak and more steak... bleah
if you recall, not 1 day have i got the chance to try the local food:(
Initially i thought i would put on at least 5 kg with the nonstop eating but on the contrary, i lost 2 kg (yay!)
Thank God... think it was because of the half marathon that i ran during the weekend that i was back in SG

lunch time in KLCC is either the foodcourt or Chinoz...
But it's more of Chinoz.. think i lunched there more than 10 times already

chi chi chinoz.. kidding.. its not exactly chi chi.

Chinoz is real laid back and serves really authentic pies (according to da boss who is a pie-lover, it's an english thing)

seriously, the food was so-so and the restaurant doesn't even serve alcohol (cos of political reasons i presume)

But there is one restaurant that i fondly remember from all my dinners....
It's located at KLCC a few doors down from Chinoz

The Apartment

Food was fantastic and i really felt very much at home.. not because of the food but the decor of the restaurant.
The interior of the restaurant is furnished like different parts of the house.... like study room, bedroom, kitchen etc etc

i seriously eat this much every night can you believe it?
really feel damn unfit and unhealthy and... but i dun even dare to utter the 3-letter F _ _ word for fear that people close to me would accuse me of having some sort of image disorder or something

I'd say theirs is considered sparse compared to the christmas lightup in orchard road

But they have Pig Tails gummies..how cute. But Pig Tails still makes reference to babi what!??!

And lastly, did you know that i have been drinking so much of Starbucks Toffeenut Latte that i'm drowning in Toffeenut and i'm very sure the sugar level in my blood is toffeenut flavoured... haha
The Toffeenut Latte here is disgustingly cheap!

For a Venti-sized in SG it is i think SGD 7.30
Here is it only RM14 = SGD 5.70

Tis' the season to be drinking toffeenut latte, falalalala lalalala

Anyway, seeing that the year is coming, although i've been through a helluva ride this year, i look forward to another exciting year ahead!

I want to end by saying this.....
When life throws lemons at you, you bloody hell turn them into lemonade!
And when life f**ks you up, you grab the f**k by the balls and tell it to piss off!
Ooops.. too vulgar. But seriously, on a last note, do not stress, rest and let God do the rest!

The Skinny Truth

The truth on skinny is..... well, there is no truth other than the fact that I adore all things skinny!

such as... skinny jeans

and slim cut jacket

and super mini short shorts - which you can't possibly wear if you're fat
although i have seen the aforementioned people wearing the said shorts strutting along the streets
oh god, just kill me already! what were they thinking??!?!?!?!
sometimes less is not always more. but in this gal's case, it is :)

and the most awesome part?
you still look so darn tall even without the visual illusion (or rather delusion, haha) of wearing heels

and somehow, ALL of them look soooooooooooo effortlessly chic and elegant!
gosh, just put me on the South Beach / Low GI / Ornish / Zone / Atkins diet already!!!!

The Half Marathon

The Half

Had to get up at an ungodly hour... flagoff for the half marathon was 6.45am.
It was a first for me being in the CBD before dawn. The weather was really good on Dec 6... cool and cloudy.

"Running is a lot like life. Only 10 percent of it is exciting. 90 percent of it is slog and drudge"
- Dave Bedford, English long distance runner

However, my other half made it 90 percent exciting and 10 percent drudgy for me:)
We trained, well can't exactly call it train since we only tried running once for 2 hours nonstop at east coast park a week before the race. And the keyword here is "tried"!

We finished the race within 3 hours! Well, its half yay and half hmmmm for both of us.. Well, next year would be better, right gen?!

My gastronomic quest

During my week back in SG, i went seeking for some culinary adventure to attempt to strike out some of the restaurants/cafes on my gastronomic wishlist.... funny i don't crave for any local food like chicken rice or laksa.

Mimolette

The carpark at Fairways Drive.
For a split second i was mesmerised by the lights dangling from the tree... reminded me of the treehouse that the elves reside in Lord Of The Rings... Magical!

Had dinner at mimolette, even though it's mimolette's neighbour (go figure) that i've been yearning to do brunch there

Have been wanting to try this cafe for quite some time. They are under the same management as 1twentysix and 1Rochester.
Coincidentally and miraculously walked pass it after the Christmas Carol movie event at the Cathay.
1Caramel is along Handy Road which is between Plaza Singapura and The Cathay.

I am still eating well......

First up, how could i have neglected my beloved ps cafe for sooooo long..?
Scooted over to have a tiger break

the green apple mojito is delish!

sat indoors in front of the open concept kitchen cos the couch seat wasn't available :(
the usual photo-taking of the vase of flower on the table
me and my PS fish & chips....
somehow, i've had diminishing marginal returns of satisfaction after eating the fish & chips there ever so often.
mental note to self: try their other mains the next time!
the only value-addedness of the fish & chips was the presentation (?)
bbq-ed ribs with onion rings.. the onion rings was waaaaaaaay to oily
ps harding salad... my favorite!
was really stuffed from dinner to have desserts.. damn! how can i NOT have desserts.?!
i really wanted to try the sticky date cake.......
the diners outside....
on the other hand, over at the northern end of singapore lies a laidback american diner, Buckaroo, which serves awesome fish & chips and other bbq and grills.
the interior of the restaurant. do not understand its understated decor.
the food there is done right to the simple basics that it tastes so so good!
fish & chips. the second best in singapore i've had so far, with smokin' frogs being the best!

Caught the movie UP in 3D as well.

The movie certainly courted my entire range of emotions!

I laughed uncontrollably when the dog leader (a fierce and domineering doberman) spoke in a spueaky voice, akin to that of Alvin the Chipmunk.

And there was also the tear jerking moment when the old man, Mr Fredrickson flipped through his late wife's adventure book and found a note from her thanking him for all the adventures he had given her and also encouraged him to find his own adventure...

all in all it was a good movie, as are most pixar films

the weekend was spent visiting nice chill out places, eating, chilling, eating and chilling and eating

first up was brunch with keith @ kith cafe!
kith cafe is a nice little gem tuck in a corner of robertson quay

do not underestimate our understated seating area...
it was a charming window to an amazing world

salmon on ciabatta bread with chips

quaint little teapot in which tea was served.. duh

even a simple cafe latte tastes so much better when you are enjoying yourself, soaking up in the Singapore river breeze

then proceeded to dinner at al forna at goldhill plaza

a quaint and cosy italian eatery

a damn waiter who doesnt know how to take clear pictures

appetisers was clams in white wine

my main was pappardelle alla veneziana

and his mains was pappardelle al quatro formaggi

dinner at al forno was spectacular... and i'm definitely coming back again

proceeded to udders ice cream for dessert

also located at goldhill plaza

they specialise in liqueur flavoured ice creams

while queueing.......

to say that the queue was long was an understatement....
it was fucking long

ooohhh.. wacky names for their ice creams

their wide variety of flavors

we ended up choosing the salty caramel and hazelnut
nothing incredibly exciting i know.. but the salty caramel wasn't even salty :(

Melaka Road Trip

On the highway to Melaka where u see the endless stretch of the countryside and the vast blue skies.
And yes, we are Arsenal fans! :)

Seafood dinner at a Portugese settlement in Melaka.
Tried both the black pepper and chilli crab.
Still prefer Singapore's rendition of the chilli crab.

Their seafood are caught fresh by the owners free-diving into the nearby sea.
And that's my mum holding a king crab.
A hugeass basket of oysters. Rumor has it that if you are lucky enough, u might find a pearl in it and get to keep it :)

And the best dish i had during this drive trip was the Yong Peng noodles!!!!!!!

Ultimatum's Swan Song

The Ultimatum is finally coming to an end! I was ultimately B-O-R-E-D to tears watching it. The only wow factor of the show was Zoe Tay's adorable wardrobe.

Like seriously, tell me you do not just LOVE what she wears onscreen! Her clothes are totally drool-worthy, unlike Fann Wong whose monochromatic, not to mention dowdy clothes really *yawn* put me to sleep. Sure her clothes are evidently from Calvin Klein, but I'm sure CK's collection is more than just black and white.

Another reason why I'm glad The Ultimatum is ultimately ending is that Felicia Chin's character in the show really annoys me. Granted she was tortured and tormented by a group of guys, but her OTT traumatic reaction is really effusively, for lack of a better word, over the top! Come on, just get over it already Sun Min :(

And finally, the ULTIMATE reason why I'm soooo relieved to the point of being thankful that The Ultimatum is screening it's last episode tonight is that my ears can finally be spared from listening to the "London Choco Roll" song played during the advertisement section EVERYDAY! Sorry pam, i know this is your favourite albeit irritating song... haha

The Patissier

After hearing pam and hsing waxing lyrical about the patissier's famed cakes, i decided on these 2 ultimate goodness for my mum&sis and dad's birthday. Why 2 instead of 3? My mum and sis shares the same birthday and my dad's birthday is only 2 days after theirs. Talk about being united.

And boy were the cakes lovely. Each of the slices delightfully melts in your mouth!
For my mum&sis, i bought the double chocolate praline. It actually tastes a bit like Bakerzin's chocolate AMER.

And for my dad, i bought the passion fruit meringue!!!!
To say that it is good would be an understatement! It was beyond good!...
The fruits in the cake were fresh, meringue totally melts in your mouth and is not overwhelmingly sweet.

the happy birthday chocolate sign is actually sprinkled with gold.. :)

My mum saw what i wrote about the patissier cakes in this post. She said this, and i quote, "I beg to differ! Swensons ice cream cakes are much better."

our brunch destination... Prive bakery cafe but of course!
where else to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and be serenaded by the lapping and splashing of waves against the yatchs docked there

as usual the sun was too hot to handle, so we settled for the cool indoors where we can STILL be serenaded by the lush display of the marina

i love their breakfast menu!
their bakery was good too and we bought a loaf of chocolate walnut cake for pam's family.
their array of cake display really dazzles me.
but of course, they can't be compared to ps cafe's array of cake dispay. now that's what i call cake confectionary palace!
ps's cakes look way too pretty to be eaten, no?

totally in love with my spanking newly built wardrobe that allows me to hang my clothes in a coordinated and color coded way. only my work clothes section is so coordinated. dresses and casual wear a tad messy and not worth showing. some other time perhaps.....

this is of course my ultimate ideal state especially so after watching the heineken ad of a woman taking her friends on a tour of her new home, showing off her fancy and spanking new walk-in wardrobe, only to be interrupted by the men screaming in glee of a walk-in fridge filled with heineken beer.
how nice it would be to have a walk-in fridge of your own bar filled with different alcoohol and mixers. now that is another level altogether.

ordered quite a variety of food but the main star is this japanese hotpot with collagen soup..... collagen is supposedly good for complexion making your skin more supple and tight!!

check out the 2 big dallop of collagen in the hotpot.
the soup was really concentrated man... with collagen im assuming.

Party Poopers When you receive an invitation to a dinner or party--whether by Evite, voicemail, or casual email--RESPOND. Yeah, that’s what that little “RSVP” thing means. Everyone knows it, yet it’s amazing how many don’t respond. Even for weddings! Planning a party or event requires a lot of work, so do the host a simple favor and let them know if you're coming or not.

Nickel & Dimin’ How annoying is it when you go to dinner with four or more people, the check finally arrives, and one of your meal companions begins to divvy up the check down to the last penny? Sure, we get that Sally had a shrimp salad, and Janet had two iced teas, while Beth only had water, and you ordered a slice of peach pie (a la mode, which is extra). The point is, if you go out to dinner with a group, be prepared to split the bill more or less evenly. If there's an outstanding cost differential, fine, estimate it and be done with it. The person who spends twenty minutes dividing the bill to the dime comes off as a cheapskate –- and kills the festive mood.

The ME Show It’s great to hear all the crazy, wacky, wonderful things happening in the lives of others. Jobs, engagements, breakups, boyfriends, puppies, pregnancies, vacations — very good stuff, all of it. But once you’ve listened to a friend, family member, or colleague spout about their own fabulous life for an hour (or two), it’s normal to expect them to ask, “So, what’s going on with you?” Those who blab on about themselves while you listen intently, then don’t ask a thing about you in return are just plain rude.

Honking Problem People who honk too often, too unnecessarily, or just to express their emotions are on our list of Most Etiquette Challenged. If you're trying to warn someone about a collision or problem, fine, otherwise it's not that serious. Give it a rest!
